Two Major Gun Bills Pass KS House

KSCB News - March 14, 2013 12:15 pm

It is a good week for those who are supporters of the 2nd Amendment as the Kansas House of Representatives passed two major pro gun bills in final action on Thursday.

The Second Amendment Protection Act (HB 2199), which Representative Reid Petty was a co-sponsor of passed 94-29. It states that "Any act, law, treaty, order, rule or regulation of the government of the United States which violates the second amendment to the constitution is null, void and unenforceable in the state of Kansas."

The Personal and Family Protection Act (HB 2055), also passed 84-38, which states that "The carrying of a concealed handgun as authorized by the Personal and Family Protection Act shall not be prohibited in state or municipal buildings unless such buildings has adequate security measures to ensure that no weapons are permitted to be carried into such building." This includes the Capitol building. In the bill there is a four year exemption to allow those in charge of each building the ability to decide rather to allow concealed carry or to provide adequate security measures. The bill also allows local school boards, community college trustees, and university presidents/chancellors the power to allow employees to conceal carry if they so choose.

Representative Petty was pleased at the outcome of Thursday’s votes.

"Upholding the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution is my duty as an elected Representative. When I took the oath I swore to uphold the Constitution. Today is a good day

for the state Kansas," Petty said.
