KSCB News - May 9, 2012 8:30 am

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday evening at 6:30pm for their regularly scheduled meeting. At the start of the meeting, the City said goodbye to Elvis Gibbons Jr., an employee who retired after 9 years of service to the City. Elvis worked for the Solid Waste Department. Among the items on the agenda, the Commissioners approved the final reading of Ordinance No. 4004, Vacating easement property, and appointed Catherine Corn to the Liberal Memorial Library Board to a 4 year term. The Commission also heard from Kelly Hill with the Flatlanders Archery Club who is wanting to host 3-D archery shoots at Arkalon Park. The Organization has already been turned down by the Arkalon Board, but the group is wanting the Commission to reconsider. Commissioners Willimon and Harrison agreed to attend the next Arkalon Board meeting and gather information from the board regarding their decision. The City Commission also heard from Sally Fuller, JoAnn Combs, and Cindy Gilmore from the Convention and Visitors Bureau about the Kansas Sampler Festival. Without the official totals compiled, estimates were at 5500 paid entrants over the 2 day event. The Commission commended Sally and here staff, and the numerous volunteers, and organizations that helped make the event possible. Liberal will again host the Sampler Festival the first weekend in May of 2013.
