Guymon Community Theater Group To Present “Radio Girls”

KSCB News - March 6, 2012 8:24 am

Guymon Community Theatre will be presenting the third and final production of the 33rd season, Radio Gals, a musical comedy; book, music and lyrics by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick on March 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and matinee on March 18 at 2 p.m. For reservations call 338-0019.

The cast includes Leah Hillman as Hazel Hunt; Lisa Schmitt as Gladys Fritts; Olivia Darcy as Rennabelle; Caitlyn Christie as America; Sharon Brockman as Miss Mabel Swindle; LaRie Hillman as Miss Azilee Swindle and William Heath as O. B. Abbott. The staff includes Director, Karen Heath, Assistant Director, Leah Hillman and Music Director, Esther Evins.

Part of the story was born from an actual incident in the life of evangelist Aimee Semple MacPherson, who ran a radio station out of her temple in Los Angeles and was prone to wander from channel to channel in search of broadcast space that was clear. In violation of the Federal wavelength code an inspector was sent to investigate.

Set in the 1920s, music teacher Hazel Hunt received a radio transmitter for her retirement and station WGAL in Cedar Rapids, Arkansas was born in her parlor. A wacky quintet of singers/musicians gather daily to set hearts thumping and toes tapping with rib tickling songs and homey chat. Her habit of wave jumping brings the government inspector and the fun continues.

This production is made possible through the support of the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
