Oklahoma Lawmakers Seek To Criminalize Abortion

KSCB News - January 17, 2012 8:09 am

A ballot measure that would criminalize
abortion by granting "personhood" status to a human embryo is one
of nearly a dozen proposals that Oklahoma lawmakers want to send to
voters in November.
The personhood amendment is similar to a proposal that was
rejected by Mississippi voters last year. But state Rep. Mike
Reynolds said Monday he’s modified the language to specify that the
measure wouldn’t apply to miscarriages or to cases where a
pregnancy threatens the life of the mother.
Oklahoma lawmakers last year approved sending two ballot
measures to a vote of the people – one to cap property tax hikes
and another to wipe out affirmative action programs in Oklahoma.
This year, lawmakers already have proposed sending 10 more
initiatives to a vote of the people.
