Redskin Tennis Faces Wichita Area Competition

The Liberal Redskins held their own with some of the better tennis teams in the state at the Valley Center Invitational Tennis Tournament on April 25th. As a team, Liberal placed 5th, but both doubles teams lost close matches to first-place winners. Competing teams included 1st Place Maize, 2nd Place McPherson, 3rd Place Valley Center, and 4th Place Wichita Northwest with Augusta, Conway Springs, Emporia, Douglas, and ElDorado.

Individual Results:

#1 Singles–Rogelio Alvarez went 2-1 finishing 5th Place. Alvarez got off to a very slow start, but finished strong with an impressive win over Douglas. He lost a tough match to Wichita NW’s Joey Wakim 6-8, He defeated Emporia’s Saul Trujillo 8-7 (8-6 in a tie-breaker), then defeated Douglas’ Daylen Zaldivar 8-4 to take 5th place.

#1 Doubles–Landon Harp/Aaron Schaffer went 2-1 finishing 3rd Place. This team helped their Regional seeding position by defeating a top-ranked doubles team from Mcpherson on their way to a 3rd Place medal. They defeated a very good team from Wichita NW (Haralson/Metzger) 8-6, They lost a tough match against the 1st Place team from Maize (Rreiswig/Simms) 6-8. Then, they finished strong with an impressive tie-breaker win over a high-ranking team of Singleton/Horton from McPherson 8-7 (7-5) to win a 3rd Place medal.

#2 Singles–Hai Vo. Hai recieved his first taste of Eastern Kansas competition today with solid effort and determination. Hai went 2-2 on the day taking 9th Place. He defeated Eldorado’s Adam Duval 8-3, lost to Valley Center’s Tyler Dort 1-8, lost to Augusta’s Nick Steffles 6-8, then defeated Emporia’s Hayden Hanson 8-2.

#2 Doubles–Duc Nguyen/Vince Nguyen went 2-1 finishing 3rd Place. All eyes were focused on the talent of this team as regional coaches took notes for future competition. The Nguyening Team defeated McPherson’s Allmon/Lindholm 8-3 before losing a match against Wichita NW’s Loganbill/Awtrey 4-8. This team bounced back with a decisive victory over Conway Spring’s Mercer/Ast 8-4 to earn 3rd Place medals.
