Fire Destroys Mechanic Shop

KSCB News - December 12, 2011 10:17 am

Heavy smoke filled the Sunday morning air from an auto mechanic’s shop that was destroyed by fire.

Guymon Fire Firefighters responded to 1702 N. Quinn at 3:44am Sunday morning to find heavy flames and smoke coming from Pete’s Auto Shop. “The building was locked and no one in the building at the time of the fire”, said Assistant Fire Chief Grant Wadley. The fire had already burned through the top of the roof and was spreading quickly through the building as Guymon Firefighters were making entry. Once Firefighters made their entry into the building the fire was quickly placed under control within 20 minutes.

The building is owned by Melvin Williams with the auto mechanic shop listed under Pete Barbosa of Guymon. “Auto shops and mechanics garages are particularly dangerous fires to fight”, states Wadley. Shops like this naturally contain flammable liquids and supplies that make fire spread faster and with more intensity. Also involved in this fire was a vehicle that was parked inside and destroyed by the fire. The interior portion of the building was completely destroyed.

Cause of the fire has not yet been determined by Fire Investigators. The building and contents were a complete loss estimated at $50,000. Firefighters were on scene for over an hour extinguishing and overhauling the interior area of the building. No injuries were reported at the scene.

Guymon Fire Department was assisted by the Guymon Police Department, Texas County Sheriff Office, Guymon Utilities Department, and Tri-County Electric.
