Statues To Brand Liberal As Home Of Dorothy

KSCB News - October 7, 2011 4:15 pm

Just in time for this weekend’s Ozfest, the City of Liberal is excited to announce statues of Dorothy Gale have arrived and will begin to appear around town.

" The statues are intended to draw traffic into our retail shopping areas on North and South Kansas Avenue and on Highway 54," said Jeff Parson, Economic Development Director for the City.

Liberal was declared the official Home of Dorothy Gale by former Kansas Governor John Carlin in 1981. Dorothy’s House and The Land of Oz bring many visitors to town to boost our economy. Approximately 12,000 to 14,000 people tour them each year.

The City is further branding Liberal as the Home of Dorothy to maximize thew economic benefits of local tourism. Statues of Dorothy in a second pose will be arriving soon.

"I am excited that Dorothy statues are going to be displayed in Liberal. I attended a Chamber Institute in Madison Wisconsin for two years, and they had decorated cow statues in the downtown area and around the Capitol. People loved going to see them. I think having Dorothy statues around Liberal will be a comparable draw for people to come here to see them and shop," said Rozelle Webb, Executive Director of the Liberal Chamber of Commerce.
