Kansas Jobless Rate Dips

KSCB News - June 17, 2011 9:17 pm

The unemployment rate dipped in Kansas to 6.6 percent in May, but the state’s secretary of labor still describes the economic recovery as tentative.

A report Friday from the Kansas Department of Labor noted the improvement in the unemployment rate but also said that the state had slightly fewer nonfarm jobs in May than in May 2010.

The unemployment rate had been 6.7 percent in April and 7.1 percent in May 2010. The state adjusts the figures to account for seasonal factors.

Labor Secretary Karin Brownlee said while the recovery remains tentative, it is going in a positive direction.

The department said employment in seven of 11 industries was higher in May than it was in May 2010.

But the state still saw overall losses of about 7,200 nonfarm jobs.
