Liberal City Commission Meets

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday night at 6:30pm in the City Commission Chambers for their regularly scheduled meeting. During the Awards, Proclamations, and Presentation s segment of the meeting, Liberal Fire Chief Kelly Kirk presented Volunteer Fire Fighter Mike Pond with a plaque and gift certificate for his 14 years of service to the City Fire Department. Mike Pond recently retired from the Department. Commissioners also accepted a gift to the City from the LEAD Class of 2011. The LEAD Class held fundraisers and raised enough funds to purchase a water safe wheelchair to be used at the Waterpark. Lead will also be presenting USD 480 with specialized handicap accessible playground equipment with the additional funds raised. Al Shank of Al Shank Insurance presented the City of Liberal with a dividend check from Employers Mutual Company in the amount of $26,451.00. This brings the total amount of dividend checks to $244,988.32 that the city has received from EMC over the last 4 years. The city commission approved the purchase of radios and and Firefighter Protective clothing for the Fire Department in the total amount of $6,772.00. Commissioners also approved the purchase of equipment to install in the new patrol cars that were recently purchased. The Liberal Police Department also updated the Commission on a new Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design program, and received permission to pursue several Federal Grants. Two are Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grants with the third being a COPS Grant which would be a cooperative effort with USD 480 to assist in putting police officers in the schools. The Liberal City Commission will meet on Thursday May 26th, as a part of the Council Of Governments meeting with the next regularly scheduled meeting set for June 13th.
