Seward County Fire Dept. Battles Blaze Monday Afternoon

On Monday May 9, 2011 Seward County Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the 4000 Block of Jane Ann Lane at 2:32pm – under control 4:28pm with the last unit clearing the scene at 7:25pm. The Seward County Fire Dept. responded with 5 brush trucks, 2 engines, 1 command vehicle and 13 Firefighters – This fire burned approximately 140 acres of grass, destroyed one shed, one tractor, approximately 1400 bales along with undetermined amount of fence and posts. Dollar loss over $50,000.00

Mutual aid was also received from:

Tyrone Fire Department – 2 trucks – 4 Firefighters

Turpin Fire Department – 2 truck – 7 Firefighters

Baker Fire Department – 2 truck – 4 Firefighters

Seward County Road Department – 4 blades – 1 water tanker

Nick Hatcher – 2 tractor and disc

Fred Bloom – 1 tractor and disc – 1 water tanker

Wayne and Rustin Wettstein – 1 tractor and disc – 1 water tanker

Dean Brown – 1 tractor and disc – 2 water tankers

Steve Nix – 1 tractor and disc

Mark Fitzgerald – 1 water tanker

The SCFD appreciates all of the help that was received and would also like to remind everyone that it is extremely dry, so be careful with anything that you do that could start a fire. The next two days the weather service is forecasting for Red Flag Warnings. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
