Wheat Continues to Worsen

KSCB News - April 19, 2011 5:44 am

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – The latest government snapshot of the

Kansas wheat crop shows farmers are struggling against dry weather

combined with high winds as the condition of the state’s wheat crop

continues to decline.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 42

percent of the wheat crop in the state was in poor to very poor

condition.

It rated 33 percent of the crop as fair. Just 22 percent was

believed to be in good condition, with only 3 percent rated as

excellent.

The agency noted that while many areas received rain and even

snow last week, it was not enough to ease the dry conditions for

growers.

Meanwhile, corn planting is ongoing with 17 percent of the corn

now seeded. That number is much higher in southeast Kansas with 44

percent planted.
