Kansas Budget Talks Break Down

KSCB News - March 11, 2011 8:11 am

Legislative negotiators have failed to find
agreement on legislation to cut the 2011 Kansas budget.
During a tense meeting Thursday, House negotiators agreed to a
Senate plan that would give the state an ending balance of about
$20 million on June 30. But the House team also said it would not
sign the agreement or support it on the House floor, and their
talks broke off.
The House members said the proposal fell short of the $35
million in savings that their chamber approved in February. That’s
the amount Gov. Sam Brownback wants to cut through the rest of the
budget year.
Senators rejected an offer by the House negotiators, saying
there was little point in approving a package that was doomed to
fail.
