Kan. House To Consider Repealing Sales Tax Increase

KSCB News - March 4, 2011 3:22 pm

The Kansas House will consider a bill that would repeal a 1-cent sales tax increase approved last year.

The House tax committee on Thursday advanced a bill to repeal the increase. Supporters of the proposal say the tax increase has hurt economic growth and burdened taxpayers.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that opponents of the repeal say it would reduce state revenues but about $390 million, which would require drastic budget cuts. The state is already grappling with a $500 million revenue shortfall.

During the last legislative session, legislators approved increasing the state sales tax from 5.3 cents per dollar to 6.3 cents per dollar, effective last July 1.
