Report: 40 Percent Of Kansas Wheat In Poor Condition

KSCB News - March 2, 2011 1:56 pm

A new report offers a grim assessment of the shape of the Kansas winter wheat crop.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 40 percent of the wheat is in poor to very poor condition, with about 35 percent in fair condition. Just 23 percent of the crop was rated in good condition and only 2 percent excellent.

The report cited concerns among Kansas farmers about lack of
moisture and snow cover this winter as reasons for the deteriorating conditions.

Monday’s report also estimated freeze damage to the winter wheat
at 1 percent severe, 7 percent moderate and 17 percent light. About
75 percent had no freeze damage.
