Counterfeit Bills Show Up In Garden City

KSCB News - November 7, 2010 12:00 am

Police are urging businesses in Garden City to be aware of a rash of counterfeit $100 bills have been reported recently.

The McDonald ??s, Sonic and Kwik Shop in Garden City have all fallen prey to the same pattern of counterfeit $100 bills.

??They were able to take a $5 bill and erase the ink off the $5 bills and then photocopy $100 bills, ? said Sgt. Michael Reagle with the Garden City Police Department.

Now police are warning businesses to be vigilant and check all $100 bills from customers. They say to hold it to the light and look for the security thread.

“In that security thread, it should say ??USA 100, ?? it should match the $100 dollars, but in these circumstances it doesn’t say that, it says $5 dollar, because that is what was originally on the bill, ? Reagle said.

He says to also make sure to match the image of the face on that bill.

“There is a ghosted image next to the more prominent image and it should match, ? he said.

Police warn those caught counterfeiting should be prepared for a serous penalty.

“It is a felony to do that and it’s reported to the Secret Service, ? Reagle said.

The checks can be done on $5 bills and up.
