Skins Win Battle of Ranked Opponents

KSCB News - September 15, 2010 12:00 am

The third ranked 5A Liberal Redskins beat the fifth ranked 6A Dodge City Red Demons 2-1 Tuesday night in the home opener at Redskin Field. Liberal’s Eduardo Moreno blasted a goal on the right side into the back of the south goals causing the crowd to erupt with 6:23 to go. Dodge City scored first but Liberal’s Auden Portillo quickly tied the game with 28:11 to play in the first half. The score would remain tied until Jose Flores set up Moreno for the game winner. The two teams who shared the WAC title last year play again October 21 in Dodge City.

Liberal head coach Lori Navarro says her team showed her something. “It shows us we have what it takes to pull out a very strong and competitive game against a great competitor,” the 13th year head coach said just after the crowd chanted “Lori, Lori.” “It shows we have to stay focused and have to keep the intensity. Today we played a much better game than we did the last couple of games. Today we got our goalie back which was great considering all the shots they took at us. We were very fortunate.”

The Skins are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the WAC and host Garden City Thursday with the varsity game beginning at about 6 p.m.
