Seward County Commission Hires Michael Rice as New County Fire Chief

The Seward County Commission met on Monday evening and heard several updates and reports. They heard from Mary Rose, County Treasurer, on the Tax Sale, Kirkham, Michael, Southwest Medical Center, Seward County Development Corporation, and Great Plains Development.

Commissioners approved Just Compensation Forms s to acquire permanent easements for right of way and for temporary construction easements, as well as the replacement of fencing to flatten and widen foreslopes, extend culverts, and install aggregate shoulders, to make official offers to landowners to acquire permanent easement for right of way and for temporary construction easements. The location of the project is on Road I (Satanta Cut Off Road) between 0.2 mile North of Road 16 and 1.3 miles North of Road 16.

The County Commissioners approved Resolution 2026-13 concerning the Seward County Development Corporation (SCDC) in the City of Liberal, and Seward County, Kansas, and approved the Interlocal Agreement.

The Commission approved the submission of an application for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, and approved the application from Debra Huddleston, to be recommended to the SWGC Board for appointment.

Approve for the Landfill was Resolution 2026-12 with Bank of the Plains for the purchase of a Cat D6 dozer at a rate of 4.53%.

At the meeting, the Commissioners approved and directed the County Administrator to put out an Invitation to Bid for the property/lot located at 301 E. 5th, the location of the former Red Cross Building, and approved a lease buyout option with SBA in the amount of of $185,000 for the SBA Tower Site.

The Commissioners moved to designate the Chair of the local Democrat Committee and the Chair of the local Republican Committee, to be present and oversee the destruction of election records for the 2022 Primary election, for the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary election and the 2025 City/School Elections pursuant to KSA 25-2708(b).

The Commission authorized Chairman Helm to sign the Proclamation designating June as Men’s Mental Health Month in Seward County.

After an Executive Session, the Commissioners moved to hire Michael Rice as County Fire Chief with a start date of July 1st.
