Voters in Morton County have decided to remove Sheriff Thad Earls from office following a recall election held Tuesday.
Unofficial results show residents voted 311-206 in favor of recalling Earls.
The sheriff had faced months of criticism from the Morton County Board of County Commissioners and the county attorney, who accused him of a range of misconduct, including mishandling evidence and falsifying employee time sheets.
County Commissioners in Morton County, alleged that 12 grams of methamphetamine went missing while under the supervision of the sheriff’s office.
Earls denied any wrongdoing. He said the officer responsible for mishandling the methamphetamine had been terminated and argued that inaccuracies in employee time sheets are common across county departments and are routinely corrected.
The allegations prompted an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which was reviewing the claims as recently as last month.
Election results are scheduled to be certified Monday. Under Kansas law, Earls will leave office the following day.
