James Richard Howell (Dickie to his family and friends), passed away at his home on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 90.
Dickie was born September 26, 1935, in Meade, Kansas, to James A. and Martha M. (Sawyer) Howell. He attended his school years in Meade, graduating in 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1954. He served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1957 with the rank of Sergeant.
He was an active oilfield consultant most of his life and owned his own company, How Co., in Liberal, Kansas until his retirement.
Dickie was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame in 2011.
He married the love of his life, Anna Marie Allen, on July 25, 1959. She passed away May 8, 2022.
He is survived by his three children, Valencia Hernandez of Halstead, Kansas,
and Deanna Howell of Wichita, Kansas, and James “Jimmy” R. Howell II of Henderson, Nevada, Three grandchildren, Kera Snyder of Kansas City, Kansas, Adreanne Hernandez of Liberal, Kansas, and Anthony Hernandez of Kansas City, Kansas, eight great grandchildren, Sister, Laverta Delong of Meade, Kansas, and A host of nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Martha M. Howell, and
Two sisters, Nadine Stanley and Babe Kelmer.
Visitation will be 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel.
A burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Shriners Children’s Hospital in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
