Joint City/County Meeting Held

KSCB News - August 18, 2010 12:00 am

A joint meeting of the Liberal City Commission and the Seward County Board of County Commissioners was held Tuesday evening at 5:30pm at the Seward County Administration Building. This was a discussion meeting and no action was taken. Discussed at the meeting was the 3 mile extra-territorial zone around the city. Currently there is a Memorandum of Understanding that the City will enforce the building and inspection codes and the county will enforce the property maintainence codes. County Commissioners discussed the City taking over all aspects of enforcement of codes in the zone. Also discussed was putting some type of traffic signal device at the 18th Street and Kansas Avenue intersection. According to traffic studies done, the traffic count does not warrant a permanent signal, but discussion led to the possibility of an emergency responders light at the intersection, that they could change when being called out. A Juvenile Work Farm was brought up as was the sharing of equipment between the City and County owned cemetaries. Also discussed at the joint meeting was the old high school at 7th and Lincoln Streets, and the continuation of the Council Of Governments monthly meetings. Commissioners agreed to hold another Joint Meeting October 10, of 2010.
