Heat Takes Toll On Spring Crops

KSCB News - August 17, 2010 12:00 am

A new report says the condition of spring-seeded crops in Kansas has continued to decline amid extreme heat and weeks of little to no rain.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 11 percent of the state’s corn crop has reached maturity, far ahead of the 2 percent that had matured at the same time last year.

Corn condition was rated 13 percent excellent, 48 percent good and 28 percent fair. About 11 percent was in poor to very poor condition.

Heat is taking a toll on the state’s soybeans with 16 percent in poor to very poor condition. Nine percent was rated excellent, with 42 percent rated good and 33 percent fair.
