Dodge City Housing Project To Move Forward

Despite strong opposition from nearly

100 residents, the Dodge City Commission has approved a rezoning

request for an apartment complex.

More than 100 people attended a meeting Monday to discuss the

complex, which would eventually include 128 apartments. It would be

affordable Section 42 housing, with average monthly rents of $473.

The commission approved Overland Property Group’s request to

have four acres of a 10-acre plot in north Dodge City rezoned for

multifamily dwellings.

A dozen people asked the

commission to halt the rezoning process. The opponents said the

complex would cause increased traffic, lower resale home values and

cause safety problems.

Mayor Kent Smoll said the commission had to consider what’s best

for the entire city, which has a severe shortage of affordable

housing.
