A Wichita man is in custody in connection with a crash that killed a Hugoton woman nearly two years ago.
The Riley County Police Department arrested the 21-year-old Tuesday afternoon on a Seward County warrant. He faces charges including involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, speeding, and failure to yield.
The charges stem from a June 22nd, 2024 crash at U.S. Highway 160 and County Road T, west of Plains, that killed 42-year-old Jamee Perez of Hugoton.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the man—19 at the time—was driving south on T Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with Perez’s SUV.
Perez was taken to a Liberal hospital, where she later died. The driver suffered minor injuries.
Court records show a wrongful death lawsuit was filed in March 2025 against the driver and his employer. Investigators say he was delivering parts at the time of the crash.
The lawsuit alleges he was speeding—about 20 miles per hour over the limit—and using his cellphone. The crash report indicates the phone may have been used for navigation.
Perez’s family is seeking more than $75,000 in damages. The case is set for trial in April 2027.
The man has since posted bond and been released. A first court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
