City Commission Rezones Properties within the City

The Liberal City Commission met on Tuesday evening with a full agenda. To start the meeting, the Commission discussed a vacancy on the Commission with the resignation of Matt Landry and the possible ways to fill that position. The Commission will open up the vacant position to an application process for those interested in filling the position.

Commissioners adopted of Ordinance No. 4646 which amends Chapter 17 Article 13 of the City Code of
Ordinance to establish the Liberal Youth Council.

The Commission gave approval to Ordinance No. 4647 to issue a Temporary Event Permit to the United
Way to allow liquor sales and consumption during their “Taco Libre” fundraising event on Saturday, May
16, and gave approval to a couple of Rezones throughout the City of Liberal. These include:

601 E. 15th Street from R-3 Multiple-Family Dwelling District to C-2 General Commercial District

1011 E. 8th Street from I-1 Light Industrial District to R-3 Multiple-Family Dwelling District.

The Commissioners adopted Ordinance No. 4650, annexing certain parcels of ground into
the city limits for Cemetery Expansion and also annexed the Zamora propertiesĀ into the city
limits. A Public Hearing was setĀ for June 16, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. to consider the annexation of
the Oxy property into the City limits.

At the meeting, the Commission gave approval for the Mayor and City Manager to negotiate and enter into contract addendum terms with Professional Engineering Consultants for the completion of Railroad Crossing Elimination Project Environmental Assessment tasks in an amount not to exceed $300,000.00.
