On March 28, 2026, Haskell County Deputies observed a vehicle with a defective headlight near the U.S. Highway 56 and U.S. Highway 83 Junction in Sublette. Deputies began traveling eastbound and conducted a traffic stop at Jennie Avenue in Sublette. After contacting the driver, later identified as Saul Ornelas, deputies observed an open container inside of the vehicle and requested Ornelas to produce his driver’s license, to which he was unable to produce. After further investigation, Ornelas agreed to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and Preliminary Breath Test, and was subsequently placed under arrest for transportation of open container and failure to comply within interlock restrictions. Deputies requested a Drug Recognition Expert to continue the DUI investigation and transported Ornelas to the Haskell County Jail. While enroute, accompanying deputies remained on scene to search the vehicle and discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside of the vehicle, resulting in an additional charge for possession of stimulant. Shortly after arriving at the Haskell County Jail, Ornelas agreed to a Drug Recognition Expert Evaluation conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol. At the conclusion of the evaluation, deputies requested Ornelas to perform a blood draw, to which he agreed. Upon consent, Ornelas was transported to Satanta District Hospital where Medical Lab Personnel drew a blood sample for further analysis. Deputies transported Ornelas back to the Haskell County Jail where he was booked and processed without further incident.
