Darrel L. Vail, age 76, of Johnson, Kansas, died Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson. He was born on October 10, 1949, in Elkhart, Kansas, the son of Lyndell and Margie (Henderson) Vail.
Darrel grew up in Richfield. After graduating from Rolla High School, he enlisted in the United States Army. Darrel proudly served from August of 1969 until April of 1972. Upon his honorable discharge, he began a career in trucking. He hauled cattle, the mail to Denver, oil for Koch for 20 years, and after several years retired from Stanton County Road and BridgeDepartment. Darrel married Karen Brooks on September 16, 1986, in Rolla. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and crocheting some amazing flag afghan blankets. Darrel also served on the firing squad for the VFW Post #3684 in Johnsonfor many military funerals.
Darrel is survived by his wife, Karen of their home; children, Lynn, Susan and Heather; stepchildren, Diane and LaDena; brother, Howard; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, Lyndell and Margie Vail; sister, Janice Vail; and stepson, Jim Jackson.
Graveside service will be Friday, April 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Richfield Cemetery in Richfield with Pastor Erik Miravete officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Kansas Military Funeral Honor Guard and the Southwest Kansas Veterans Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation will be Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
