Burn Ban in Effect for Seward County Including Liberal and Kismet

The Seward County Board of Commissioners announced a burn ban in effect for Seward County – including Liberal and Kismet – to remain in effect through April 6, 2026, unless the Commission votes to lift or extend the ban.

This ban prohibits open burning, including burning of agricultural land and landscape clearing; tumbleweeds and invasive vegetation; trash barrels and containers; construction or demolition debris; recreational fires (including campfires, bonfires, fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, chimineas); and the careless use of smoking materials which may ignite dry material.

This ban does not prevent the safe use of contained outdoor barbeque grills, including standard gas, pellet, and charcoal grills used for the purpose of outdoor cooking. Grills must be fully contained and have a cook grate and lid that can be closed when not in use to contain embers until they are fully extinguished.

The Liberal Fire Department urges residents to use caution when performing activities that can produce a spark or flame. Burn permits will not be used by the department during this burn ban.

Per County Resolution, any person who shall violate the terms of this resolution shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor, and may incur a civil penalty in an amount not to exceed $2,500.00 per violation, as provided by law (K.S.A. 48-939).
