LIBERAL QUALIFIES TWO GOLFERS FOR STATE!
GARDEN CITY, KS — Liberal High School Lady Red Golf Team returned to Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City to participate in the KSHSAA 6A Girls Golf Sub-State Tournament on Tuesday. This was one of four Sub-State tournaments around the state to qualify for the State tournament next Monday and Tuesday.
Senior Rylie Friess shot a career best 102 to secure her spot at the State tournament, while Junior Scarlett Carr shot a career best 104 to qualify for her second consecutive appearance at State. Junior Jyzelle Juarez, finishing her first season of playing golf, recorded her career best score of 130 on the tough Buffalo Dunes course.
“I am so happy with all of our girls,” Coach Bert Luallen stated. “Three girls recorded career best scores and all six shot below their season average score! But I’m excited for Rylie and Scarlett.” Things did not start out well for LHS as their team score on the first hole (#10 – par 5) was 13 over par. “Everyone of the girls were really nervous on that first hole,” said Luallen. “But they settled down after they got into the round.”
This is the first time in Luallen’s five-year coaching stint that the Lady Redskins have qualified more than one golfer for state. Ashlynn Wagenseller qualified for State in his first season in 2022, followed by Bret Lyon in 2023 and last year Scarlett Carr qualified.
The eight teams participating included #2 Garden City, #5 Manhattan, #12 Mill Valley, #18 Maize, #19 Liberal, #20 Dodge City, #27 Campus, and #29 Wichita North (who only sent two golfers). The top 12 teams from around the state were split up so that three of the 12 were assigned to each of the four tournaments.
The top three teams from each Sub-State tournament advance to the State Tournament. In addition, the top 5 individuals not on the three qualifying teams will also qualify. In the event there is a tie for the fifth spot, all players tying for that spot will go.
