Young Politician Desires Change In Topeka

KSCB News - August 6, 2010 12:00 am

“We must, as a state, be fiscally responsible in both the good times and the bad times.”

Spend a few minutes with Garrett and you’ll soon realize this is not your typical college graduate. As student-body president at Washburn University, he decided to intern at the State Capitol this Spring.

“Basically, I didn’t really like what I saw,” said Love. “I felt like Topeka was becoming more and more all about the lobbyists and the interest groups and the politics in general — and not the people.”

On Tuesday night, he defeated Melvin Neufeld in the Republican Primary for the 115th House District. Neufeld had served on the House for 24 years, yet Love won in a landslide, garnering 67% of the votes.

“It was a very rewarding feeling,” added Love. “We worked very hard throughout the campaign.”

“Election night was pretty crazy as we were watching the votes come in. It felt pretty good to see him come out on top,” said Logan Headlund, 21. As the Coalition Director, he played a big role in the Love’s campaign.

“We hit it pretty hard. Basically he told me to contact as many people as I could within the district.”

The campaign’s secret weapon: social networking.

“What that presented for us was a way so that we could get our message out there instantly to thousands of people at no cost,” said Love.

With no opponent in November’s general election, Love has already started his plan to get Southwest Kansas the representation they deserve.
