Redskins Ahead of Last Year’s Pace as Track Season Opens

KSCB News - April 4, 2014 12:40 pm

Liberal fourth year head track coach Caleb Cline says many of his athletes are ahead or at last year’s end of the season pace. Cline says that is an exciting aspect of opening the season Friday at Winfield. The LHS program continued progress last year by winning the regional meet and taking fifth in the state. The girls were 10th at state.

LHS returns two time 300 hurdle state champion Trenton Hammond who will run both hurdles and both sprint relays. Liberal also returns state experience with mid distance runners Edwin Sobalvarro, Eli Altamirano, Erving Altamirano, and Octavio Arredondo. Eli Altamirano returns with state experience in the 100. Sammy Obando, Erving Altamirano, Luis Medina, and Ivan Alleman anchor the long distance team. Chase Eatmon returns to the high jump with state experience. Throwers Nolan Larkin, Hayden Coker, Victor Carrera, Clayton Benson, and Rex Heronemus return as Liberal’s top throwers. These are some of the top returners from last year.

The LHS girls have depth in their mid distance and long distance teams with some strenth in the throws but are thin in sprints, jumps, and hurdles where two time state champ Jai Chapman chose not to come out for track. Key returners in the mid distances are Holly Hinkle, Gabby Amparan, and Kim Francis. Key long distance runners include Hinkle, Katherine covert, Camryn Slatten, Yanelly Jurado, and Saw Ahmara. Cline says he and head girls coach Trace Haskell are particularly high on this group of young runners. The girls should be good in the throwing events with Riley Jones, Megan Beseker, Steph Garcia, Megan Larkin, Carley Shelton, and Rashida Davis.

Liberal competes at Winfield Friday with Newton, Campus, Derby, El Dorado, Trinity Academy, Wichita North, and Winfield.
