LHS Girls Tennis Team Places Fourth of Eleven in Garden

The Lady Redskin Varsity Tennis Team finishes 4th place out of a field of eleven teams at the Garden City Invitational Tennis Tournament on Saturday, September 25th. Dodge City took first place team honors with 41 points, Meade finished in 2nd place with 26 points followed by Garden City with 25 points and Liberal with 24 points. Susan Nguyen continued to carry the team on her back with a solid performance.

Individual results:

#1 Singles—Susan Nguyen went 2-1 on the day earning the 2nd Place Silver Medal. She faced the only two girls she has lost to this year, nearly avenging both defeats. After receiving the #3 seed and first-round bye, Susan defeated Shelby Dinkel from Hays 8-2. Then in a rematch with a talented clay-court specialist from Germany, Susan defeated Carlotta Stern representing Meade 8-4 to put her in the finals against the defending 4A Champion, Caitlin Wark from Colby. After giving up the first four games, Susan battled back to tie the match up 7 games all. In an exciting 7-point tie breaker, Susan fell short 5-7 to win the Silver Medal.

#2 Singles—Kathy Nguyen went 2-2 finishing 6th Place. She defeated Vanessa Monzon from Ulysses 8-1, lost to Great Bend’s Sophia McVey 4-8, defeated Pratt’s Lauren McClain 1-8, then found herself in a rematch with McVey from Great Bend losing 6-8 to finish 6th Place.

#1 Doubles—Lauren Harp & Desirae Courkamp went 2-2 on the day finishing 9th Place. They lost to Pratt’s Kettering/Taylor 4-8, lost to Hickert/McRae from Hays 3-8, then bounced back to win the next two matches defeating Ulysses’Martin/Monzon 8-3 and defeating Cimmaron’s Fellholter/Doll 8-6 to win 9th Place.

#2 Doubles—Katie Plunk & Kassandra Rosales went 2-2 on the day finishing 7th Place. They lost to Pratt’s Hart/Riney 2-8, defeated Meade’s Piteo/Flowers 8-1, lost to Garden City’s Sterling/Gardner 3-8, then defeated Pratt’s team of Hart/Riney to take 7th Place.

The Lady Redskins travel to McPherson next Saturday.
