New Voter Party Affiliation Laws To Take Effect

What can I do under the new party affiliation law for 2014 Primary?

The current laws are still in effect until June 30th, 2014. Any registered voter can change party affiliation by filling out a new registration application with the County Election Office or Secretary of State’s office.

  • Any application postmarked June 30th, 2014 will be accepted

  • Electronic submissions of voter registrations by fax, email, or on-line, will be accepted if submitted before midnight June 30th, 2014.

From July 1st-August 31st, 2014

  • Democratic affiliated voter…

    • may not change your party affiliation.

    • may not disaffiliate from your party affiliation.

    • may request and vote a Democratic ballot.

  • Republican affiliated voter…

    • may not change your party affiliation.

    • may not disaffiliate from your party affiliation.

    • may request and vote a Republican Ballot.

  • Unaffiliated voter…

    • may affiliate with a party after July 1st, 2014.

    • may affiliate with the Democratic or Republican party on Election Day or when advance voting and receive a ballot for that party.

    • may not change back to Unaffiliated until September 1, 2013.

  • Libertarian affiliated voter…

    • may not change your party affiliation.

    • may not disaffiliate from your party affiliation.

    • may not request and vote a Democratic or Republican ballot.

  • Brand new registrant, not transferring from another county…

    • may declare a party affiliation by the deadline for new registrations, July 15th, 2014.

  • Currently registered voter who needs to change something besides party affiliation…

    • you may still change all other information, name, address, phone, gender, etc., by July 15th, 2014.

September 1st, 2014-June 1st, 2016

All registered voters may again change party affiliation with no restrictions.
