SCCC/ATS' Todd Carter Receives National Recognition
01/08/2014

The National Association of Biology Teachers is proud to award Todd Carter the 2013 NABT Honorary Membership.

Carter is the director or research and assessment at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School.

The NABT Honorary Membership was established to recognize individuals who have achieved distinction in teaching, research or service in the biological sciences, and is considered the highest honor given by the association. Candidates for this award must be nominated by an NABT member who submits an official letter of nomination, with that letter being supported by letters of recommendation from at least nine other NABT members in good standing. Those individuals selected to be Honorary Members become lifetime members of NABT.

Carter taught high school science in small, rural schools for over 10 years, followed by another decade as a biology faculty member at Seward County Community College (SCCC) in Liberal, KS. At SCCC, he served as division chair from 1999-2008, received a NISOD Teaching Excellence Award in 1997, the NABT Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award in 2002, and the Balcomb Community College Teaching Award in 2004 from the Southwestern and Rocky Mountain Division of AAAS.  Carter is well-known throughout the NABT community, and was President of NABT in 2008 as well as Interim Executive Director.

He is currently a member of the NABT Finance Committee and Chair of the NABT Long Range Planning Committee.  Carter has represented both NABT and community colleges on a number of occasions, including the Vision and Change Education Summits, and he has served on advisory committees for grants focused on teaching biology at the community college level. Carter is Co-PI for an NSF-RCN grant targeting the teaching of undergraduate introductory biology and is project director for an NIH Bridges to the Baccalaureate program where he mentors students and their research in biology.

‘“Todd has contributed so much of his time to NABT and biology education, and the organization would not be the same without him,” said Stacey Kiser, NABT President-Elect. “He is a tireless NABT member who continues to lead regional and national biology education reform efforts that make NABT the ‘leader in life science education.’ Presenting Todd with NABT’s Honorary Membership is truly an honor for me.” The award was presented at the NABT 75th Anniversary Gala held during the 2013 Professional Development Conference in Atlanta, GA. “We congratulate Carter Carter on his Honorary Membership and thank him for his tremendous leadership and service to NABT.”
