Saints Win Jayhawk West on Dramatic Last Day
04/29/2013

Hayden Howard and Adam Guay

Thank you Dodge City Conquistadors.  The Conqs rallied from 5-0 down going to the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and win it in extra innings 6-5 Sunday night as the Saints bus was ironically nearing Dodge City.  The Saints were coming back from a Sunday sweep at Cloud County Sunday when the Saints put everything together in 7-0 and 10-0 wins.  Dodge swept Garden meaning the Saints win the conference outright.

In game one, Hayden Howard (7-3) tossed a gem.  The 6'4" lefty pitched a one hitter with nine strikeouts with scouts looking on.  Seward scored three in the second thanks to a two RBI single from Johnny Griffith and a Reid Thompson ground out.  Troy Owen launched his third homer of the season in the third.  Bret Lewis provided an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-0.  Deven Nelson's two RBI double with two outs in the sixth gave Seward the 7-0 lead.

T.J. Looney started game two but left with arm issues after facing one hitter.  Cue Adam Guay.  The freshman right handed reliever responded with a complete game, two hit, and seven strikeout shutout in Seward's 10-0 eight inning win.  Seward scored one in the first when Bryson Allen homered for the fifth time this season and the third time in the last two weekends.  Alex Scanlan's two out RBI single scored Allen in the fifth to make it 2-0.  Jacob Fuller's line drive to left disappeared over the left field wall for his first homer of the year to make it 4-0.  Seward scored six with two houtsw in the eighth to blow the game open.  Deven Nelson delivered an RBI single followed by a Troy Owen two RBI double, an Alex Scanlan RBI single, and a Frankie Bolanos two RBI single.

Johnny Griffith was 7-9 on the weekend and Alex Scanlan had two three hit games on the weekend.

Seward is 29-26 and finishes 21-11 in the Jayhawk West while Cloud falls to 22-28 overall and 11-21 in the Jayhawk West.  Seward wins the Jayhawk West for the 10th time in 13 years and 14th time in 19 years.

The Saints will play a non conference game against Dodge City Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Brent Gould Field.

Seward hosts the #8 team from the Jayhawk East the Independence Pirates (15-33, 13-21) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brent Gould Field for two nine inning games.  The "if necessary" game is Sunday at 1.  The games will air on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
