Two northwest Kansas school districts are seeking approval from the State Board of Education to merge their operations.
The request comes from the Norton Community and West Solomon Valley districts, located in Norton County near the Nebraska border. West Solomon Valley has fewer than 20 students, while Norton Community has more than 700.
The state board is scheduled to consider the request at its meeting Jan. 12 in Topeka. The merger has already been approved by the boards of education in both districts.
West Solomon Valley is seeking to disorganize as a district because it fails to meet minimum high school graduation requirements. Officials believe merging will improve the overall quality of education in Kansas.
