Brock Kappelmann - April 24, 2018 5:55 am

COLBY, Kan. – The Seward County softball team (35-19, 22-6) finished their regular season on Monday, splitting with the Colby Trojans in a double header. Colby took game one 2-0 before the Lady Saints won in comeback fashion in game two, 8-7.

GAME ONE RECAP

Monique Ashley (24-6) picked up her second straight loss. Both runs scored off Ashley were unearned while she threw a four-hitter. Over six innings, she struck out 10 batters and walked one.

Seward managed just three hits on the day with Sage Harrison finishing with two hits. Jullian Atteberry came away with the only other hit for the Lady Saints.

The Lady Saints never threatened in the game, coming away with 1-2-3 innings in four of the seven innings played.

The Trojans used two one-run innings to take pick up the win, both runs coming off errors. The first run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Colby started the inning by reaching on an error by right fielder Sydney Epp. After a strikeout, another error, this time by first baseman Madeline Owen allowed the first run to cross the plate.

An inning later, the Trojans got another baserunner off an error before advancing to third base from a single. A passed ball by Harrison allowed the second run to score.

Ashley retired the side in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lady Saints couldn’t get anything going in the seventh, losing 2-0.

GAME TWO RECAP

Jordan Cordrey (11-10) picked up the win in the circle pitching 6.2 innings. Of the seven runs scored, only three were earned. Cordrey gave up 10 hits in her winning effort. Monique Ashley (2) picked up the save, getting the last out of the game.

Seward finished with seven hits in the game as Kaitlin Ammermann and Madeline Owen finished with two hits. Harrison and Owen each homered in the game. For Harrison, it marked her 34th career home run, placing her just one away from tying the all-time home run record at Seward County.
Colby got the scoring started in the second inning, driving in a leadoff single with an RBI double two batters later.

A three-run inning just an inning later, pushed the score to 4-0 for the Trojans. Two errors started the inning for the Lady Saints before the Trojans capitalized with an RBI single. A walk loaded the bases for Colby before a single and sac fly scored two more runs.

Seward started their rally in the top of the fourth. Harrison led off with a walk before Owen crushed a home run to centerfield to cut the deficit to two. A walk and two errors loaded the bases for Atteberry, who drove in the third run with a single up the middle.

The Trojans added another run in the bottom of the fourth, hitting four straight singles to make it 5-3.

Another Harrison walk gave Owen a second chance to drive her in, this time in the form of a double to left field to once again cut the deficit to one run.

Colby did their best to keep their distance, pushing the lead back up to two runs with a fielder’s choice, coming after a triple to right field.

Harrison put the Lady Saints on top for good in the top of the fifth with a a go-ahead grand slam to right field to make it 8-6.

The Trojans fought back to cut into the deficit. An error to start the inning put the Lady Saints in a bad spot before another error two batters later scored the run to make it 8-7.

Seward kept Colby off the scoreboard the rest of the way, securing the win to end the regular season.
