The Sierra Club says it is planning
litigation against a Kansas electric utility as part of a national
campaign against coal-fired power plants.
The environmental group scheduled a news conference Tuesday
morning in Lawrence to announce the legal action. Spokeswoman
Stephanie Cole declined to discuss the details Monday.
The Sierra Club has designated Tuesday as a national “Day of
Action” against coal-fired plants.
Kansas relies heavily on coal-fired power plants despite a
growing push in recent years to develop wind farms. Federal figures
show that in June, about 68 percent of the electricity generated in
Kansas came from coal-fired plants.
