Science Program Coming To Liberal Memorial Library

KSCB News - June 12, 2012 8:26 am

Patrick Ross, professor of biology at Southwestern College in Winfield, along with some of his students will lead ??Who Glows There? ?? Discovering Nature??s Nightlights,? on Thursday, June 14 at 4 p.m., at the Liberal Memorial Library.

Ross, a specialist in animal behavior and ecology, has partnered up with several libraries over the past few years to do science education outreach through their summer reading programs.

The presentation will cover the diversity of organisms that are able to produce their own light, an ability known as bioluminescence. The Southwestern College professor and several of his students plan on bringing fireflies as well as glowing scorpions, mushrooms, fish, and even microbes. Equipped with a state of the art microscope and camera projection system, Ross will demonstrate how even microscopic organisms are able to generate their own light.
Participants will get to learn and ??speak? firefly language as well as create their own glowing creatures and sample some fluorescent candy.

For more information, contact the Library at (620) 626-0180.
