SCCC Moves Closer to CDL, Diesel Tech Expansion

Joe Denoyer - May 5, 2023 4:30 pm

Seward County Community College is poised to expand its truck driving and diesel technology programs, beginning this summer.
“We are preparing to bid the project and will present those to the board later this summer,” said SCCC President Brad Bennett. “We anticipate breaking ground this summer but have not set a date.”

SCCC was awarded a $1.8 million grant as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Bill, which. Gov. Laura Kelly signed in May 2022. The college is required to match the funds dollar-for-dollar, and has worked to solidify industry partnerships and raise funds over the past year.

The funds will be used to build a truck driving facility and expand the diesel technology building. Kelly described the bill as an investment in workforce expansion.

“It’s exciting for us and the area to be able to build a new truck driving school and accommodate a lot more students in an area of such high demand,” said SCCC President Brad Bennett, adding that “it’s also going to be a huge expansion for diesel technology as well.”

SCCC will announce a date for groundbreaking on the project later this summer.
