The first Safe Haven Baby Box in western Kansas will be installed in Garden City, the police department announced Friday.
The baby boxes allow a parent who wants to surrender their baby to leave their newborn in a temperature-regulated deposit box, typically located at a firehouse.
The first Safe Haven Baby Box was installed in Woodburn, Indiana, in 2016. This will be the third Safe Haven Baby Box in the state. The first was installed in Hutchinson in 2024, soon followed bySalina.
The Garden City baby box will be located at Fire Station 3 at 3535 Schulman Ave. A dedication for the new box will be on July 30 at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
“This is the first Safe Haven Baby Box in Western Kansas, providing a secure, anonymous, and compassionate option for parents who may be in crisis,” the Garden City Fire Department said. “Together, we’re taking an important step in protecting the most vulnerable and offering hope when it’s needed most.”
