There is change in Hooker. There is also plenty of continuity. Trevor Powers left for Liberal after going 80-23 in eight years at Hooker High. The Bulldogs also graduated a stellar senior class which paved the way for back to back state championship games.
But the cupboard brimming with young yet familiar faces at Hooker. Tanner McBee steps in as head coach after three years as an assistant coach at HHS. He graduated from Hooker in 2019. He amassed 3,494 rushing yards with 48 rushing touchdowns in four years at Hooker. The rest of the coaching staff largely remained intact at Hooker leading to stability on the sidelines.
Plus, Hooker has Justin Palacios and Keilan Robinson and others don’t. Palacio, the Jr. running back and outside linebacker returns. He rushed for 1,865 yards and 20 touchdowns last year and 1,748 yards and 21 touchdowns as a freshman. Keilan Robinson is one of the top multi sport athletes in the state in basketball, track, and football. He caught 29 passes for 769 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. He came on late as quarterback after an injury to Kleat Martens. He passed for 314 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 124 yards and four touchdowns. This year, he enters the season prepared to play quarterback. He has grown to 6’3″ and figures in at QB/WR/FS.
Some of the other key Hooker players are Sr. MLB/OL Hunter Ray, Sr. WR/SS Gannon Hill, and Jr. QB/TE/RB/DE Gunnar Martens.
Hooker has 38 out for football at the Class A division one school. They return three starters on both sides of the ball. Hooker has seven seniors in football and most of the team comes from the junior and sophomore classes.
Hooker was featured during Sportsguys Monday morning. Hooker plays five of their first six in Texas County but plays three of their last four on the road.
