Rogers Leaving Liberal for Lyons

The Liberal boys basketball coach the past two seasons is leaving Liberal to be the head boys basketball coach at Lyons.  The Lyons board of education accepted the hiring of Brandt Rogers at Monday night’s board meeting.  Rogers, a Meade native, was head coach of the Redskins the past two years.  He was 8-34 with an 0-16 WAC record the past two years at Liberal.  The Skins were 3-18 this season with a young team which often started three freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior.  James Fieser was a first team all WAC player on the team.  A senior oriented team in 2023-24 went 5-16.  Brooks Kappelmann was a second team all WAC player of that team.  The Redskins have endured eight straight losing seasons under four different coaches.  Liberal’s last winning season was 2017 when they went 18-3 under Scott Hinkle.  Rogers leaves for Lyons which is a class 3A school in central Kansas.  The Lions were 10-11 last year.

Rogers spent the previous six seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Ness City, leading the Eagles to a
combined 93-50 record. Under Rogers, Ness City would win the 2019 2A State Championship followed
by a 3rd place state finish in 2021 after Ness City dropped to a Class 1A D-1 school.

During his six seasons at Ness City, Rogers’ Eagles would win four conference titles and in 2019,
Rogers was named Sports In Kansas 2A Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

Prior to his time at Ness City, Rogers was the head coach at South Central High School in Coldwater,
Kan. from 2014 to 2017. He led the Timberwolves to a 42-24 record and two conference titles in his
three seasons at South Central.

Rogers graduated from Meade High School in 2008.
