At 2:51 pm Tuesday Liberal firefighters were dispatched to 734 S. Jordan Ave. for a reported fire in the garage of the residence.  At the time of the 911 call one occupant was reportedly trying to evacuate, but experiencing difficulty in doing so.

The first arriving law enforcement personnel encountered an adult male lying in the front yard with respiratory distress.  They were able to move this individual further away and to the Seward County EMS unit for treatment and subsequent transport to SWMC.  At the arrival of the first fire engine, the garage was fully engulfed with evidence of extension into the attic and interior of the home.  Multiple hose lines were deployed and the fire was declared under control at 3:15 pm.  Challenges encountered in the incident included a delayed response of some personnel due to a train blocking several crossings across the town as well as high daytime temperatures.  All responding units were clear of the scene and returned to service at 5:11 pm.

The residence suffered extensive fire, heat & smoke damage throughout.  The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance to the displaced family.  The fire was determined to have started in the garage and is considered accidental in nature.  The exact source of ignition has not been determined at this time.

Liberal Fire responded with seventeen personnel, two engines, one squad truck & two officer vehicles.  Other agencies assisting with the fire were:  Liberal Police Department, Liberal Building Department, Seward County EMS, Liberal / Seward County Emergency Communications Center, Black Hills Energy, Southern Pioneer Electric and the American Red Cross.
