Redskins Win South Central Regional

KSCB News - October 29, 2009 12:00 am

McPherson left several scoring opportunities on the frozen turf at Redskin Field in the first half. Liberal took advantage holding down a frustrated McPherson team 2-0 Thursday night at Redskin Field. The temperature was 35 with gusty winds but it didn’t slow down 16-3 Liberal. Although the game was scoreless at halftime, Isai Gutierrez trickled a ball into the south goal just 28 seconds into the second half. At the 17:07 mark Gutierrez sliced a pass from the left corner to the center of the field where Jose Chavira pounded home Liberal’s second goal. Head coach Lori Navarro says her guys came out ready to kick. “In the first half we came out touching the ball well,” Navarro said. “We did a good job posessing the ball and winning those 50/50 balls. The only thing we were missing is more attack.” Liberal advances to the quarterfinals which means they will get a home game Tuesday night likely at 6:30 PM. The opponents is unknown. For now, Navarro is enjoying another regional title after bringing back just two starters from last year’s team who finished third at state. “We started out with a pretty young team,” Navarro said. “It’s pretty awesome to know that these guys just know how to step it up. They’re just following tradition and it’s contagious. That’s a pretty awesome thing. I’m just glad we’re on the winning side of it.”

McPherson finishes 10-7-1.
