Operation Lifesaver Rewards Drivers, Sites Others

On June 25,2014 members of the Liberal Police Department (LPD) assisted personnel from Union Pacific in an Operation Lifesaver campaign. Operation Lifesaver is an active continuing public education program designed to reduce the number of collisions, deaths and injuries at railroad intersection crossings. According to the Operation Lifesaver website in 2013 there were 3 fatalities and 11 injuries in the State of Kansas. Operation Lifesaver focuses their attentions on education, enforcement and engineering. The focus of this operation was on education and enforcement.

Ten violations were cited during the 2-hour operation. Over 30 drivers/pedestrians were rewarded with information pamphlets and gift cards for safe driving at the crossing.
