Catherine Marie (Kirkland) Thomas

Catherine Marie (Kirkland) Thomas was born July 19, 1956, and departed this earth at her home on May 28, 2025, following a lengthy battle with breast cancer at the age of 69.

Cathy was born in Lamar, Colorado to James and Loretta Kirkland. She was raised in Springfield, Colorado before moving to Johnson, Kansas. She attended school through the 10th grade and later acquired her GED. Soon after, she married, and four children were born. Cathy worked in a Retail Management position for many years. This is where she met and married her best friend and soulmate, Danny. They were married February 4, 2002, in LaJunta, Colorado. They made their home in Rocky Ford, Colorado for several years before moving to Dalhart, Texas. Soon after Danny and Cathy had the honor of adopting and raising three grandchildren. Her family meant everything to her, and she loved them dearly. She enjoyed family vacations to amusement parks, the mountains, lakes or anywhere fun for the kids.

While living in Dalhart, Danny and Cathy both worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Cathy worked as a Correction Officer for several years. Their final move was to Pampa, Texas, where they transferred to another correctional facility. Cathy retired in 2019 after working 15 years as a Correctional Officer Sergeant and Unit and Property Officer.

At the young age of 12, Cathy asked the Lord into her heart and was baptized during a revival at the First Baptist Church in Springfield, Colorado. A song that was dear to her all these years from that special day was, “He Lives”. The Lord lived in her heart till her last breath.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 23 years, Danny; children, Cherlyn (Brad) Brobst of Springfield, Colorado, James (Wendy) Ferretti of Pampa, Texas, Robert Corey of Indianapolis, Indiana, Seven Thomas of Lubbock, Texas, Walter and McKenzie Thomas of the home; Sister, Pam Moore of Johnson, Kansas. 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous family members and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, James and Loretta Kirkland; brothers, Jim, John, Olan and Loyd Kirkland; sister, Brenda Parks; daughter, Angelia Strite and grandson, Devin Brobst.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson, Kansas with Pastor Erik Miravete officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Avenue, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
