Carl Albert Sappelsa

Carl Albert Sappelsa, 98, passed away at his residence at Brookdale Liberal Springs on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

He was born on August 30, 1927 in New York City, NY, to Joseph and Augusta Marie (Krack) Sappelsa.

On October 1, 1950, he married Evelyn Marie Spinner in Franklin Square, Long Island, New York. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2006.

Carl and Evelyn moved to Liberal in 1976, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Carl started his career as a warehouse supervisor for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in Long Island, New York, until 1974.

In Liberal, he worked as a director of quality control at National Beef from 1975 until his retirement in 1991.

Carl was very proud of his service in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he was member of the Naval Reserve for many years.

Carl was member of Fellowship Baptist Church, the Liberal Senior Citizen Center, The American Legion, and the Ceramic and Painting Club.

Carl enjoyed going to the SCCC Saints Basketball games and the Liberal BeeJay baseball games. Carl was proudly named Fan of the Year for the BeeJays. He had a passion for gardening, spending time with dear friends, and oil painting. Carl was an accomplished painter, having taken up the art at the age of 90.

He is survived by;

His son, Warren Sappelsa of California, and his grandchildren Noah, Levi and Asher.

His dear friends, Gail Phelps and Tera and Lance Robinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Sappelsa, His parents, His sister Doris McBride and her husband Jerry, His brother Joseph Sappelsa, and his sister in law Carolyn Sappelsa.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 from 2pm to 7pm at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be at 10am on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor David Harris presiding.

A private burial will take place where Carl will be laid to rest with his beloved Evie.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Liberal Senior Center or the Fellowship Baptist School, in care of the Hornung Family Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
