New Safety Signage Along U.S. 83/50 Aims to Reduce Crashes

Joe Denoyer - August 4, 2023 3:21 pm

Motorists traveling, U.S. 83/50 in Finney County will see newly installed yellow “Safety Corridor – Increased Enforcement” signage. These warning signs bring attention to heightened law enforcement efforts as part of a comprehensive Safety Corridor Pilot Program launching this month.

The U.S. 83/50 Safety Corridor extends from Plymell north through Garden City and west to the Holcomb exit. It is one of four designated Kansas highway corridors included in a five-year initiative of the Drive To Zero (DTZ) Coalition to reduce fatalities and serious injury.

Partnering organizations in the DTZ Coalition will support the program with initial and long-term safety messaging to area communities and their organization’s customers. Throughout the pilot program, the Kansas Department of Transportation will also evaluate and potentially implement low-cost safety improvements such as sign enhancements or innovative, new pavement markings. Crash data from 2016-2021 reports 86 total crashes along the U.S. 83/50 corridor route in that five-year timeframe, including 13 fatalities and 14 serious injuries. The signage was installed by KDOT to alert motorists of increased enforcement of risky driving behaviors.

The Safety Corridor Pilot Program will run until 2028. Secondary educational messages in schools and businesses along the four corridors will be distributed beginning this month. For more information, visit the corridor website at https://www.ksdot.gov/bureaus/burTrafficSaf/safetycorridor.asp.
