Mustangs Have Need for Speed

The Southwestern Heights Mustangs enter the 2025 season needing their team speed to be an advantage.  They graduated a lot of size on the line from last year’s 2-7 team.  They are banking on third year varsity quarterback Omar Mercado and an athletic group around him to make plays this season.

The Mustangs were 2-7  last year and haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 2007. They have won more than two games just twice in the past eight years. J.R. Mendoza is in his second year as head coaching after being a mainstay coaching the junior high team for  20 years.

Heights has 27 out for football with five starters back on both sides of the ball.  Some of the key players are Sr. QB/CB Omar Mercado, Sr. RB/OLB Jackson Stanfield, Jr. C/TE/QB/S Manny Mendoza, Sr. TE/DE Isaac Amerin, Jr. WR/MLB Luis Martinez, Sr. WR/P Drezden Zimmerman, Sr. WR/CB Martin Garcia, and Sr. TE/K Javier Martinez.

The Mustangs play two of their first three at home and on 102.7.  They were featured during Sportsguys Tuesday morning.
