Mini bikes and pocket bikes are becoming more common among youth in our community. While we understand they may seem like harmless fun, it is important for parents and riders to know: these bikes are not street legal and are not allowed to be operated anywhere on public property.
Kansas law requires that any motor-driven cycle operated on a public roadway be equipped with headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, a horn, and working brakes – just like any other motor vehicle. Mini bikes do not meet these legal requirements and therefore cannot be used on city streets, sidewalks, alleys, or public trails. They are not exempt due to size or age of the rider.
Any motor-driven cycle with more than 5 brake horsepower must also be registered, insured and operated by someone with a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement. These laws are in place for public safety, and they will be enforced.
Recently, there have been several close calls involving children on mini bikes who are speeding, running stop signs and pulling into traffic. These actions create dangerous situations for both the riders and drivers, and the consequences could be tragic. We are urging parents to take this seriously and not allow their children to operate mini bikes in areas where they are not permitted.
These bikes are not toys – they are motor vehicles under Kansas law.
